Each summer the opera program at the Brevard Music Center enrolls approximately 30 singers who, together, constitute the Janiec Opera Company.

Some hallmarks of the Janiec Opera Company:

  • Roles are sung by students.
  • All productions are fully staged.
  • All productions utilize professional directors, designers, costumers, etc.
  • All mainstage productions are presented with orchestra.

New for 2016

World-renowned countertenor, and BMC alum, David Daniels joins the Janiec Opera Company to perform his signature role of Oberon in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. During his residency Mr. Daniels will offer masterclasses, coachings, and perspectives on developing a successful career in music. Mr. Daniels has appeared with the world's major opera companies and on its main concert and recital stages, and is the newly appointed Professor of Music at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

The Porter Center

Brevard operas are presented in the Porter Center at Brevard College. Mainstage productions occur in the 600-seat Scott Concert Hall. Other productions will occur in the intimate Morrison Playhouse, a state-of-the-art black box theater.

Audition Requirements

Admission into the Opera Company is determined by audition. Brevard Music Center encourages applicants to audition in person if possible, but applicants may choose to post a video to YouTube in lieu of a live audition.

All live and recorded auditions will receive full and equal consideration. Application deadline: January 25, 2016

Live Auditions

For a live audition, be prepared to perform:

  • contrasting arias in Italian, German, French, or English (preferably from the 2016 season repertoire)
  • one song from the musical theater repertoire
  • a one-minute spoken monologue
  • Note: Please prepare an aria (or arias) from the posted season repertoire if you are interested in a specific role.

Upload a headshot and a current resume/bio. Bring with you an audition repertoire list.

Accompaniment is required for your audition. You may bring your own accompanist or utilize the pianist on site during the auditions. There is no need to contact the pianist in advance. The Admissions Office will send details regarding the pianist(s) several days before your audition date, in addition to other pertinent information.

Live auditions will take place:

  • Brevard: December 1
  • Chicago: December 5 & 6
  • Houston: December 8
  • New York: December 13, 14, 15
  • Boston: December 16 & 17

Students must apply and pay the $75 application fee to reserve an audition time.

YouTube Auditions

For YouTube auditions please include the following selections:

  • contrasting arias in Italian, German, French, or English (preferably from the 2016 season repertoire)
  • one song from the musical theater repertoire
  • a one-minute spoken monologue
  • Note: Please prepare an aria (or arias) from the posted season repertoire if you are interested in a specific role.

Accompaniment is required.

In addition to your audition, please upload an 8"x10" photograph, a current resumé, and a list of the repertoire included on your video.

Do not submit a YouTube video or any other material before applying.
