Opera In A Box

Opera In A Box is an original opera series introduced in 2013. Each summer, a composer and/or librettist will bring their work-in-progress to the Brevard Music Center. Opera students will have the opportunity to help them achieve their vision. Sections of the opera will be staged and performed in the Morrison Playhouse, a state-of-the-art black box theater. The new work will be narrated by the creators and the stage director, guiding the audience through the creative process of developing a new work. Join the Brevard Music Center as it helps create opera for the 21st century.

This season Opera In a Box will present Falling Angel – a new opera in progress by composer J. Mark Searce and librettist Lucy Thurber, originally commissioned by New York’s Center for Contemporary Opera.

New for 2015

JOC Tour to Asheville, NC – In 2015, Brevard Music Center and Asheville Lyric Opera will partner to co-produce Verdi’s Rigoletto. Brevard’s artistic and technical staff will be joined by members of the ALO team to present performances at the Porter Center in Brevard, and at the ALO’s home at the Diana Wortham Theatre in Asheville. BMC alumnus and leading operatic baritone Grant Youngblood returns to sing the title role of Rigoletto in both Brevard and Asheville. JOC students will have the opportunity to sing in both the Brevard and Asheville legs of the tour. Final lead casting will be determined in conjunction with BMC and ALO artistic leadership. This exciting new partnership will present BMC students with the prospect of performing a major work of the standard repertoire alongside an established artist, at the home of a professional regional opera company.

Center for Contemporary Opera – 2015 marks the beginning of a new relationship between the Brevard Music Center and New York’s Center for Contemporary Opera. Brevard will work with CCO to bring new works to Brevard’s stages, both as part of the Opera in a Box series, as well as our mainstage productions. BMC and CCO artistic leadership will work together to choose promising operas to workshop and stage. Future opportunities for BMC students and alumni to perform in New York and abroad may materialize throughout the life cycle of each particular project. This year’s black box production of Falling Angel marks the inaugural collaboration of this partnership.

The Porter Center

Brevard operas are presented in the Porter Center at Brevard College. Mainstage productions occur in the 600-seat Scott Concert Hall. Other productions will occur in the intimate Morrison Playhouse, a state-of-the-art black box theater.
