Dean Anthony - Director of Opera

Each summer the opera program at the Brevard Music Center enrolls approximately 30 singers who, together, constitute the Janiec Opera Company. In 2012 the median age of students in the program was 22.

Some hallmarks of the Janiec Opera Company:

  • All roles are sung by students. There may be double casting for some roles.
  • All productions are fully staged.
  • All productions utilize professional directors, designers, costumers, etc.
  • All mainstage productions (three of the four shows in 2013) are presented with orchestra.

Opera In A Box (New for 2013)

New for 2013, the Brevard Music Center is creating a new opera composer series entitled Opera In A Box. Each summer, a composer and librettist will bring their work-in-progress to the Brevard Music Center. Opera students will have the opportunity to help them achieve their vision. Sections of the opera will be staged and performed in the Morrison Playhouse, a state-of-the-art black box theater. The new work will be narrated by the creators and the stage director, guiding the audience through the creative process of developing a new work. Join the Brevard Music Center as it helps create opera for the 21st century.

This season, composer/librettist Michael Ching has been chosen to present his new work Speed Dating Tonight! created in partnership with Dean Anthony.

  • Daily opera class, which comprehends performance matters and professional matters
  • Extensive coaching and preparation with professional staff
  • Masterclasses with faculty and visiting professionals

The Porter Center

Brevard operas are presented in the Porter Center at Brevard College. Mainstage productions occur in the 600-seat Scott Concert Hall. Other productions will occur in the intimate Morrison Playhouse, a state-of-the-art black box theater.

Audition Requirements

Admission into the Opera Company is determined by audition. Brevard Music Center encourages applicants audition in person if possible, but applicants may also supply a video DVD or post a video to YouTube.

All live and recorded auditions will receive full and equal consideration.

Applications and auditions for admission must be received by February 1, 2013, however auditions and applications will be reviewed until all roles are cast.

Live Auditions

For a live audition, be prepared to perform:

  • two contrasting arias in Italian, German, French, or English
  • one song in English from the classical musical theater repertoire (e.g. Lerner and Loewe, Rodgers and Hammerstein)
  • a one-minute spoken comic monologue

Bring with you an 8" x 10" glossy photograph and a current resume.

Accompaniment is required; please bring your own pianist if possible. An accompanist will be available for hire. Send an email to admissions@brevardmusic.org or call (828) 862-2140 for specific information about official accompanists and fees.

Live auditions will take place:

  • January 4 & 5 - New York, NY
  • January 12 - Chicago, IL
  • January 18 - Memphis, TN
  • January 24 & 25 - Houston, TX

Students must apply and pay the application fee to reserve an audition time.

YouTube and DVD Auditions

For auditions on YouTube or DVD please include the following selections:

  • two contrasting arias in Italian, German, French, or English
  • one song in English from the classical musical theater repertoire (e.g. Lerner and Loewe, Rodgers and Hammerstein)
  • a one-minute spoken comic monologue
