Each summer the opera program at the Brevard Music Center enrolls 35 singers who, together, constitute The Janiec Opera Company. In 2011 the median age of students in the program was 23.

Some hallmarks of the Janiec Opera Company:

• All roles are sung by students. There may be double casting for some roles.
• All productions are fully staged.
• All productions utilize professional directors, designers, costumers, etc.
• All mainstage productions (three of the four shows in 2012) are presented with orchestra.

• Puccini: La bohème
• Gilbert and Sullivan: H.M.S. Pinafore
• Rossini: Il barbiere di Siviglia
• Poulenc: Dialogues des carmélites

• Daily opera class, which comprehends performance matters and professional matters
• Extensive coaching and preparation with professional staff
• Masterclasses with faculty and visiting professionals

Brevard operas are presented in the Porter Center at Brevard College. Mainstage productions occur in the 600-seat Scott Concert Hall. Other productions will occur in the intimate Morrison Playhouse, a state-of-the-art black box theater.

Membership in the Janiec Opera Company is determined by audition. Brevard Music Center recommends that applicants audition in person if possible, but applicants may also supply a video DVD.

Applications and auditions for admission must be received by Friday, January 31, 2012, however auditions and applications will be reviewed until all roles are cast.

Live auditions have completed for the 2012 season. DVDs will be accepted until January 31, 2012.

For auditions on DVD please include the following selections:

• two contrasting arias in Italian, German, French or English
• one song in English from the classical musical theater repertoire (e.g. Lerner and Loewe, Rodgers and Hammerstein)
• a one-minute comic, spoken monologue

Accompaniment is required.

In the package with the DVD include an 8"x10" glossy photograph and a current resumé.
