Composition
Term: June 25–August 10, 2008
The Composition Program offers extensive opportunities and experiences for emerging composers. Students study privately with a professional composer and participate in a number of related activities.
- An orchestration class culminates in an orchestral reading.
- Seminars are held regularly; topics may include philosophical and technical issues, the creative process, music literature, career possibilities, etc.
- Several guest composers work with students each season. Recent composers have included Bright Sheng, Samuel Adler, Peter Schickele, Gunther Schuller, Donald Freund, Claude Baker, Robert Livingston Aldridge.
Composers and pianists will help form the chorus for a performance of Carmina Burana. Participation in the chorus is required for these students.
The BMC composition lab is equipped with MIDI keyboards and a network printer. Students intending to use notation software are expected to bring their own computers. Two hours of college composition credit are available for Advanced Division students.
- Young Artist composition applicants must submit at least one score and recording of an original work.
- Advanced Division applicants must submit scores and recordings of two or three works.
