Brevard Music Center is pleased to introduce a new Amateur Chamber Music Workshop @ Brevard for the 2017 season. Come to Brevard to be a chamber musician for the week! Learn from the world renowned Shanghai Quartet along with the Julius Quartet in a comprehensive four-day course of study. Rehearse and perform with other amateur violinists, violists, and cellists in an array of string chamber music groups. Learn, study, and play side-by-side with professional chamber musicians.

The Program

Each participant will have multiple opportunities to explore their love for chamber music through rehearsals, coachings, private instruction, readings, and performances. Learning will be geared to the level and specificity of the participant.

Areas of focus and program features will be:

  • coachings with the Shanghai and Julius Quartets
  • private lessons with Artist Faculty
  • participate in impromptu chamber music readings
  • rehearsals with other participants
  • attend Artist Faculty recitals
  • perform in a final culminating participant recital
  • opening gala dinner and nightly cocktail hours
  • explore the waterfalls and Blue Ridge Mountains of beautiful Western North Carolina

Participants are invited to participate in world-class activities happening on campus every day, at no extra charge.

Concerts, special receptions, ensemble rehearsals, or social gatherings

Music and Ensembles

All participants will partake in an initial chamber music reading on Wednesday morning, in order for the faculty to place you into chamber music ensembles. Once ensembles have been formed and repertoire has been assigned, music will be provided to each participant by the Brevard Music Center.

Please feel free to bring string chamber music that you might like to read throughout the week in impromptu readings. (Remember to bring all of the parts!)

Fees and Payment Schedule

The cost for the Amateur Chamber Music Workshop is just $1200 per person. This includes tuition, basic level housing (shared double occupancy dorm room), meals, tickets to all BMC concerts during the workshop, and on-campus parking.

A non-refundable reservation deposit of $500 is due within 2 weeks of your confirmed registration. The balance of the fee is due by May 1, 2017.

Early Bird Discount

Register before Friday, March 31, 2017, and only pay $1100 (a $100 discount!).

Non-playing Partner / Observer Fee

We offer a special arrangement for non-playing partner / observers of registered participants. The partner / observer rate of $450 entitles them to housing, meals, observing classes, and tickets to all concerts during the workshop.


Tuition to the Amateur Chamber Music Workshop @ Brevard includes basic housing (shared double occupancy dorm room with a shared bathroom) and free on-campus parking. Other housing options at an additional cost. Limited availability!

All housing options are air-conditioned. Participants will need to provide their own sheets, towels, and toiletries. A linen service is available upon request at an additional cost.

All rooms and buildings on campus are non-smoking.

Shared Double Occupancy Dorm Room

  • Shared bedroom, shared bathroom, included with tuition, and a roommate will be assigned to you.

Private Dorm Room

  • Private bedroom, shared bathroom, tuition plus $150*, and limited availability!

Shared Cabin

  • Private bedroom, private bathroom, shared porch, tuition plus $250*, and limited availability!

Private Cabin

  • Two private bedrooms, two private bathrooms, private porch, tuition plus $400*, and limited availability!

* These housing options are best if bringing a partner / observer. All partner / observers must be housed with the playing-participant.


The Brevard Music Center Campus offers a wide variety of facilities including the newly-renovated Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium (1800 seat amphitheater), Straus Auditorium, numerous large rehearsal spaces, over 100 practice rooms, housing, Searcy Cafeteria (dining hall), and outdoor recreation areas. Campus Dining

All members of the campus community – students, staff, visiting artists, faculty, and their families – dine in the Searcy Cafeteria. The cafeteria is open for three meals each day. A variety of fresh and delicious options, including vegetarian, are always available. The food service staff will make accommodations for special dietary needs when necessary.


The Brevard Music Center is dedicated to making a great experience for all of its participants. All payments, except the $40.00 registration fee and $500.00 reservation deposit, will be fully refunded if the Center receives notice of cancellation before May 1, 2017.

No reduction in fees can be made for late arrival or early departure.

No refund for any reason will be made after May 1, 2017.
