Frequently Asked Questions

When will the 2010 application be available?

In early November 2009.

Why are there no live instrumental auditions this year?

See our blog post for a full explanation.

How good do I have to be in order to be accepted?

Really good.

Should I send a letter of recommendation from my private teacher?

Only if you are applying for the High School Voice program. Otherwise, do not send a letter of recommendation.

If I was accepted to Brevard last year but did not attend, can I attend this year without applying or auditioning again?

No, but we are happy for you to try again.

If I was accepted to Brevard last year but did not attend, would that have a negative effect on my application this year?

Not at all; we welcome your 2010 application.

If I was a student at Brevard in 2009, do I need to audition again for 2010?

Yes, unless you received an award during the 2009 season that makes you exempt.

When will I hear about my acceptance?

The Music Center begins sending admissions information in late March, but the process takes a few weeks. Notification is sent electronically. Students who have been admitted will also receive a letter and contract via the USPS.

What does it mean if I'm placed on the waiting list?

Brevard can enroll only a precise number of students in each instrument. Some students are accepted immediately, some are denied immediately, and the rest are placed on the waiting list. When someone who was accepted declines our offer, we admit another student from the waiting list.

What should I expect for financial aid?

Brevard awards financial aid according to merit and to need, so the amount varies from student to student. However, most students receive some aid from Brevard.

To be considered for need-based aid (work study) you must complete the financial aid portion of the online application. Merit awards are based primarily on your audition.

It is prudent to assume you will not receive a full scholarship from BMC, because almost everyone pays something. There are many places that can help you, if you do some research. Your own school, music clubs, civic and religious organizations, and even private businesses might provide scholarship assistance for summer study.

Read our blog entry with more information on finding support.

Can I bring a computer and a cell phone?

You can bring a laptop; you will find several wireless hotspots on campus. Brevard has a computer lab available if you don't have a laptop.

Sure, you can bring a cell phone. Because of the terrain, cell phone service can be spotty in some areas of the campus.

Are religious services available?

Yes, in the town of Brevard. Students who wish to attend weekly services may be transported by BMC residence life staff. Some area churches send vans to meet students and bring them back to campus afterwards. Services are not held on campus.

How do I get to the off-campus concerts?

BMC provides a bus to transport students to and from the evening Porter Center concerts. If you are performing at any of our off-campus venues, we'll get you there.
