Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium

Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium (WPA), named for Bishop J. Kenneth Pfohl and his wife, Bessie Whittington Pfohl, the parents of BMC's founder, James Christian Pfohl, was built almost 50 years ago.

The following is an excerpt from Brevard Music Center's 1964 program book:

For more than 20 years, the magic of music has transformed an old wooden shed into one of the most inspired concert halls in the world. What has served as church, gymnasium, assembly hall, dance floor, and concert hall will now retire to a more modest role with the construction this summer of a beautiful redwood and natural stone auditorium.

A $75,000 challenge grant from a Southern foundation was met after extensive fund raising efforts by Dr. Pfohl; and the 1465-seat structure is scheduled for completion in the early fall. The new auditorium's excellent lighting and acoustics give Brevard Music Center one of the best all-purpose stages in the country. An orchestra pit seating 85 players makes possible regular productions of opera and ballet at the Center.

The construction of WPA was completed during the fall of 1964, and received formal dedication nearly half a century ago, on July 4, 1965.

In 1973, the seating capacity was expanded to 1647, and then again in 1997, a much needed face lift consisting of structural and cosmetic work began, increasing the seating to 1802. This latest renovation also added sound panels to the ceiling, providing acoustical improvements to the musical experience. Just recently, the stage was renovated and modified with an extension, designed to bring ensembles closer to the audience, enhancing their presence and sound.

Seat for a Song, which began in 1964, offers patrons a chance to purchase a small plaque in honor or memory of a loved one, which is then permanently attached to a seat in the auditorium.

Brevard Music Center is continually working to improve the concert experience in this auditorium for our students, faculty and concert-goers.
