John S. Candler, President and CEO
John S. Candler, President and CEO of Brevard Music Center, joined the Music Center's governing board in 1981 and has served as president since 1993.
A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute in 1962, he served two years active duty as an officer with the US Army. Mr. Candler spent over twenty years with Olin Corporation and held positions of Vice-President of Manufacturing, Corporate Vice-President of Human Resources and Executive Vice-President of Ecusta Paper Group. He left Olin in 1986 as part of an entrepreneurial ownership group that purchased several businesses with worldwide manufacturing and distribution.
Mr. Candler has served on several non-profit boards, including Brevard College, Transylvania Community Hospital, Transylvania County Arts Council, Arts North Carolina, Heritage and Cultural Tourism Partnership of North Carolina and Transylvania Partnerships, Inc.
Mr. Candler considers being part of the growth and development of the Brevard Music Center a joyful experience and finds it immensely satisfying to work in an organization that is so dedicated and committed to investing in the future achievement of such promising young people.
Keith Lockhart, Artistic Director
Keith Lockhart took on artistic leadership of the Brevard Music Center in October, 2007. An alumnus of the Music Center, Mr. Lockhart has been Conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra since 1995, and surpassed the milestone of his 1,000th Boston Pops concert in 2007. During his 14-year tenure, he has also made 66 television shows, including PBS's Evening at Pops and the annual July Fourth spectacular, produced by CBS4 in Boston and shown nationally on CBS Television. He has led the Boston Pops on 32 national tours, four overseas tours of Japan and Korea, and in performances at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall.
Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops have recently released three self-produced recordings: Oscar & Tony, Sleigh Ride and America and previously recorded eight albums with RCA Victor, including the Grammy-nominated The Celtic Album and the Latin Grammy-nominated The Latin Album.
Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, Keith Lockhart began his musical studies with piano lessons at the age of 7. He holds degrees from Furman University in Greenville, SC, and Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and has previously served as associate conductor of both the Cincinnati Symphony and Cincinnati Pops orchestras. As Music Director of the Utah Symphony since 1998, Mr. Lockhart led that orchestra at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, and he will conclude his tenure there after the 2008-2009 season. Mr. Lockhart will continue his appearances as a guest conductor with major symphonies in the United States and the world.
