High School Orchestral Studies

June 22 - August 5, 2012

Orchestral performance forms the heart of the Brevard Music Center. Students who play orchestral instruments or saxophone or euphonium may enroll in the Orchestral Studies program.

All students in the Orchestra Studies program:

  • rehearse daily and perform extensively in various ensembles
  • receive weekly private lessons
  • have opportunity for formal chamber music study
  • may perform in solo and chamber concerts
  • may participate in masterclasses
  • may compete in the Jan and Beattie Wood Concerto Competition

Students in the High School Division perform in the Transylvania Symphony Orchestra under BMC's principal conductor, Keith Lockhart, and distinguished visiting conductors. The TSO maintains a regular schedule of sectional rehearsals in addition to the daily rehearsal of the full ensemble.

Woodwind, brass, and percussion students also participate in the Transylvania Symphonic Band. The TSB commences its season with the traditional Patriotic Pops concert on July 3, always one of the Music Center's most popular events. The TSB presents three other concerts featuring advanced repertoire not typically available to high school ensembles.

All students in the High School division take classes in music theory and music literature.

Students in the High School division will encounter older students at concerts, in studio and master classes, and in the cafeteria. However, there is no cross-pollination in ensembles, and high school students have their own residences, their own campus life system, and their own social activities.
