Young Artist Voice

Term: June 27 - July 19 or
July 19 - August 10

New in 2008, the Young Artist Voice program is designed for aspiring young singers who plan to pursue serious vocal study at the college level. Each student will receive individual attention from Brevard Music Center faculty and guests from the professional opera world.

The Young Artist Voice program is open by audition to high school students who, by June 27, 2008, have completed their freshman year and who are at least 15 years old.

Curriculum will include:

  • Twice-weekly voice lessons
  • Movement and dance
  • Acting and performance techniques
  • Italian diction
  • Chorus
  • Performance opportunities in solo recital, opera scenes, and ensemble
  • Musicianship and music literature
  • Masterclasses on auditioning for college, makeup, and other topics of interest

Auditions

In addition to completing the online application, students must also submit an audition via video recording (there are no live auditions for the Young Artist Voice program).

Specifically:

  • Students must submit a video DVD or VHS tape. Include on the recording two songs from the classical repertoire (not musical theater), performed from memory. One or both must be sung in English.
  • With the video include a letter of recommendation from a music professional (voice or piano teacher, choir director). Do not send a letter from a relative.
  • Do not submit an audition or any other material before completing the online application.

The application deadline for either session is March 1, 2008. Students apply for either one of two sessions:

  • Friday, June 27 – Saturday, July 19 or
  • Saturday, July 19 – Sunday, August 10

Class size for each session will be limited to 15.

Total cost for a three-week session: (tuition, room and board, free admission to all events): $2350
