Piano

Full session: June 25–August 10, 2008
Half session: June 25–July 19 or July 19–August 10, 2008

Piano instruction at Brevard is conducted by renowned faculty from distinguished conservatories and universities. Students receive weekly lessons and have access to courses in piano literature and related subjects.

Performance opportunities abound. A public student piano recital occurs each Thursday in Straus Auditorium. Piano students may also perform on Brevard's general student recital series presented every Monday.

Each week a different member of the BMC piano faculty conducts a masterclass, working with students from other studios.

The curriculum for AD piano students includes a weekly class, "Piano and the Other", where guest lecturers will explore the role of the piano in a wide range of genres and ensembles. YA students will meet 4 times per week for a Piano Literature class that surveys the standard repertoire.

New for 2008, piano students may elect to participate in a collaborative track through which they can play chamber music or vocal music or partner with instrumentalists in sonatas.

Chamber groups are formed upon arrival at BMC, receive faculty coaching, and may perform on the BMC@TCL concert series, in chamber music concerts, and in instrumental master classes.

Pianists and composers will help form the chorus for a performance of Carmina Burana. Participation in the chorus is required for these students.

Of special note is the BMC Piano Competition, sponsored by the Zimmerli Foundation, in which students perform solo repertoire. Piano students may compete also in the Jan and Beattie Wood Concerto Competition. Both competitions are open to full-session students only.

Steinway is the official piano of the Brevard Music Center. All of the pianos at Brevard are Steinway products.

Students have access to more than 60 practice rooms with pianos. Also, students may practice in teaching studios as the schedule permits.

General audition requirements are provided on the Auditions page. Repertoire requirements for instrumental auditions are provided on the
