Instrumental Auditions

Brevard Music Center will conduct auditions for instrumentalists at several national sites during February, 2008. The schedule will be posted here when it is available. Auditions are arranged as part of the online application.

A live audition is not required. Brevard recommends that instrumentalists consider submitting a recorded audition that represents their best work.

Requirements for live and recorded auditions are the same.

Requirements for the Young Artist Division

Auditions should not exceed 12 minutes.

  • Piano: Include two solo works or movements, in contrasting styles.

  • Instrumental Studies (any instrument except piano or percussion)

    Include two solos, in contrasting styles, of about seven minutes total playing time. Accompaniment is optional. Brevard Music Center does not provide accompaniment for live instrumental auditions.

  • Percussion: Percussionists must send video recordings in DVD or VHS format (only). Live auditions are not open to percussionists. Include as many of the following as possible.

    • A rudimental snare solo/etude
    • A symphonic-style snare solo/etude
    • A four-mallet keyboard solo
    • A two-mallet keyboard solo
    • Demonstrate loud and soft cymbal crashes
    • A standard orchestral cymbal excerpt
    • A standard orchestral tambourine excerpt
    • A standard orchestral triangle excerpt
    • A timpani solo

Requirements for the Advanced Division

Auditions should not exceed 12 minutes.

  • Piano: Include two solo works in contrasting styles. Pianists applying to the collaborative track should add a collaborative performance to the audition program; the 12-minute limit does not apply in this instance.

  • Instrumental Studies (any instrument except piano or percussion)

    Include one solo, 4-5 minutes in length, plus three standard orchestral excerpts. Accompaniment is optional. Brevard Music Center does not provide accompaniment for live instrumental auditions. String players applying to the quartet track should add a chamber performance to the audition program; the 12-minute limit does not apply in this instance.

  • Percussion: Percussionists must send video recordings in DVD or VHS format (only). Live auditions are not open to percussionists. Include all of the following.

    • A rudimental snare solo/etude
    • A symphonic-style snare solo/etude
    • Two standard orchestral snare drum excerpts
    • A four-mallet keyboard solo
    • A two-mallet keyboard solo
    • Two standard orchestral mallet excerpts
    • Demonstrate loud and soft cymbal crashes
    • Two standard orchestral cymbal excerpts
    • A standard orchestral tambourine excerpt
    • A standard orchestral triangle excerpt
    • A timpani solo
    • Two standard orchestral timpani excerpts
