Ensemble placement is determined by audition upon arrival at the Music Center.

In the Young Artist division, wind, brass, and percussion students may play in both a wind organization and an orchestra and will play chamber music. String students perform in the Transylvania Symphony and a chamber group.

In the Advanced Division, students play in an orchestra and in a chamber group or other small ensemble, e.g., percussion ensemble for percussionists.

Each student in the Instrumental Studies program receives a weekly private lesson with a BMC faculty member. Many faculty members elect to hold weekly studio classes for their students.

Students have the opportunity for solo performance on the Monday student recital series. Students may participate in the Jan and Beattie Wood Concerto Competition, held at the end of the third full week of the season.

Students may be selected to perform in masterclasses by guest artists. Most masterclasses are open to all students.

General audition requirements are provided on the Auditions page. Repertoire requirements for instrumental auditions are provided on the
Instrumental Auditions page.
